About the Front Yard Farm School

Welcome to The Front Yard School – where dreams take root and grow! Our journey began when we purchased our home in 2017. The property had been xeriscaped and covered in rocks by the previous owners, but it retained one small circle of grass. While at the time, that patch of grass served as nothing more than a bunny potty pad, we saw potential. I had dreams of a front yard garden that would be an invitation for my children and their friends to play and explore, and bring joy to our larger community.

My family soon broke ground on the garden, and the first iteration of our front yard farm was born. We planted cherry tomatoes, strawberries, and sweet peas, and let our yard get taken over by watermelon. That first year, my girls enjoyed wheeling around watermelon deliveries to our neighbors and handpicked flowers they found along the way.

We’ve continued to build onto our micro-farm – adding raised beds one year, roses the next, and most recently, a small clutch of quail. While mistakes and mess are part of the process, we learn something new every season, allowing our garden to grow a little greener and more bountiful. Today, the front yard farm is small but mighty – boasting over 45 different types of plants, including fruit trees, herbs, flowers, and vegetables. After some practice hosting events for our Girl Scout troop and homeschool friends, we’re ready to take the next step and share our garden with our larger community through monthly class offerings for homeschoolers and online lesson plans for those who want to try farm schooling at home.

So come on in, grab a trowel, and let’s grow something together!

Meet the Owner

Liz Fairchild, Owner Front Yard Farm School

Hi, I’m Liz. I’m a proud mom to two wildlings, a homeschool teacher, and a hobbyist gardener. I’ve been gleefully digging in the dirt since I could toddle. Whether I was making mud pies or planting sunflowers, the garden has always been my happy place.

For me, any bad day or mood can swiftly vanish by observing sproutlings push through the mud, making friends with a garden snail, or picking a sun-ripened strawberry. I want my kids, and indeed all kids, to have this outlet, too.

My wish is for everyone to discover the peace that comes from digging in the dirt. Through the Front Yard Farm School, our goal is to share the magic of gardening with our community. You don’t need a big space or a green thumb to grow something; you just need to get messy and try.
